Quilts to a Tee: Using Unique Clothing in Quilts

This one-hour lecture for guilds and groups is designed to provide guidance and inspiration for quilters who are thinking about tackling a T-shirt or memory quilt. In the first half, techniques in the design and construction of traditional grid quilts and artistic variable layout quilts are discussed and a quick lesson in block preparation is given. Quilt samples and photos are then used in the second half to show how quilters can expand the possibilities of the conventional T-shirt quilt and use interesting items including nearly anything that can be washed, sewn and made to lie flat.

T-Shirt Quilt Basics

This one-hour lecture for guilds and groups covers the basics of preparation of clothing, how to determine which layout will work given the clothing presented, grid vs. variable layouts, and the basics of construction. Variable layout design and use of partial seams will be explained as well as what to look for in the design stage to make assembly easier. Quilt samples and photos of interesting layout challenges will be shared.

Quilting with Underwear

This one-hour lecture for guilds and groups includes many examples of using unique clothing in quilts. From the basic T-shirt to ties, sweaters, pajamas, jeans, baby clothes, underwear, baby blankets, and many others, inspiration is provided to use nearly anything in quilts that can be washed, sewn, and made to lie flat. It is the goal that you start looking at your pile of unique clothing with quilter eyes!
